The Downtown Rotary club will be sponsoring Sophie Tuechler, 15, from Austria, as a Rotary Youth Exchange student at Topeka High for the 2018-19 school year. Sophie is an award winning athlete in sports acrobatics, a competitive gymnastic discipline performed in pairs with acrobatic moves, dance and tumbling set to music.  She also enjoys listening to music, skiing, going to movies at the cinema, and playing games with her family.  She aspires to a career as an engineer like her mother.  For more information, contact David Beck, 785-817-0144 or at beckman49@gmail.com.

Posted by Linda Ireland on Feb 14, 2018
Are you doing something fun between now and the end of May?  Why not ask one of our outstanding Rotary Youth Exchange students to join in on the fun.  Take them to a movie, go rollerskating, picnic in the park, take in a basketball, baseball, soccer game, go on a road trip visit a museum/art center, attend a show at TPAC or Topeka Civic theatre - any place you go with your family.  This is great way to expose your family to our youth exchange students when you can't be a host family.  Ariana is from Romania and Tea is from Belgium.  To make arrangements, contact David Beck, 785-817-0144, beckman49@gmail.com.

TO VOLUNTEER TO BE A MENTOR - CLICK HERE

Speed Mentoring is EASY, non-threatening (to you and to the student), and FUN for everyone.  Rotarian Mentors will talk one-on-one with students for a 5-7 minute block before moving on to conversation with another student.  There will be three sessions with different students - starting at 10:45 and ending by 2:15.  YOU MAY ATTEND ALL OR PART OF THE OVERALL EVENT, as student sessions will be at 11:02, 11:56 and 1:19.

You will be provided with suggested questions for engaging the student (and they will have similar questions for you).  Our own Angel Zimmerman will be our host for these conversations, along with support from our Mentoring work group and consulting HPHS staff.

Light the Night

Posted by Linda Ireland on Jul 05, 2017
Light the Night - Lighting of the historic water tower
July 7 - 8:30 pm - 11th & Quincy

Downtown's historic water tower at 11th & Quincy will become a beacon of light, thanks to the creative thinking of ArtsConnect, SARIN Energy, Torgeson Electric, Jason Adams and Falk Architects. As a prominent structure in Topeka's skyline, the tower has punctuated the South end of the Kansas Avenue corridor since 1943.

Join the inaugural lighting ceremony on July 7, 2017 at 8:30 p.m., as each concrete flute of the tower is lit. These LED lights will have the ability to change color and brightness to create what is believed to be the largest illuminated art piece in the State of Kansas.

Be part of this memorable First Friday with inside hard hat tours, live music, beverages, ice cream, sidewalk art and more! (Lighting takes place at sundown).

Our Scots Movement Rotary Interact Club Projects

Posted by Linda Ireland on Dec 08, 2016
Our club sponsored Scots Movement Rotary Interact Club* at Highland Park High School needs assistance with their Lego Drive which will continue into 2017.  If you can help, bring your Legos to any meeting.  Here are the details:

LEGO DRIVE - Collecting new or old legos for Highland Park Central.  Legos help students with focus and behavior issues.  Currently, there is only one set in the principals office.  The Interact Club would like to collect enough legos for each classroom.

* WHAT IS INTERACT?  Interact is a club for youth ages 12-18 who want to connect with other young people in their community or school. Interact club members have fun while carrying out service projects and learning about the world. Interact clubs organize at least two service projects a year: one that benefits their community and one that encourages international understanding.

New RI Director Named from Topeka Downtown Rotary!

Posted by Linda Ireland on Nov 09, 2016
District 5710 is thrilled to announce that the Nominating Committee for Rotary International Director in Zone 27 has selected our Rotarian, Larry Dimmitt, of the Rotary Club of Topeka Downtown, to be an RI Director in 2018-20.

This is a tremendous honor for Larry, and most fitting, given his service and commitment over many years to Rotary International, The Rotary Foundation, our zone, district and his club.  Larry is currently serving as the Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator for Zone 27, he is a Past District Governor for District 5710, and he has served in many other roles throughout his Rotary career.

Many of you know and have worked with Larry through his years of very active service in our district.  His selection to serve on the RI Board of Directors is an acknowledgement of his dedication to Rotary and his ability to further the purposes and objectives of Rotary International and its extension throughout the world.  Please join us in congratulating Larry, and showing him how much we in his home district particularly appreciate his service.

Thank you to our volunteers:  Marie Pyko (Chair), Nicki Salazar, Sherda Williams, Brad Walker, Linda Ireland, Jane McCall, Gary Shofner, Lee Morris, and Ramin Mahmoudian.

On September 15th at Garfield Park Community Center, club Rotarians spent the day with over 500 4th graders teaching them about The Incredible Journey- a lesson to identify the different ways water moves through the water cycle.  Each student was given a "sun" bead on a string and rolled a dice sending them to different stations - ocean, river, clouds, soil, plant, lake, animal, ground water and glacier to receive a different bead.  At the end of the activity each student had a bead bracelet and a story about their water cycle journey.

Rotary Youth Exchange Families Needed

Would your family be interested in hosting a Rotary Youth Exchange student next school year, August 2016 – May 2017?  Jeff and Trish Geske will be the first host family for our youth exchange student from August through December.  Olga is from Italy and will be enrolled at Shawnee Heights High School.  We are recruiting for 2 or 3 families so the commitment would be for only 3 - 5 months, not the entire year.  The host families would need to be in the Shawnee Heights school district or be willing to commit to getting Olga to Shawnee Heights each day.  The host families do not have to be Rotarians!  See David Beck for more information if you're interested or know a family who might be.

Topeka Water Festival

Posted by Marie Pyko on Oct 28, 2015

Downtown Rotary members shared the “Incredible Journey” of the water cycle with over 550 4th graders from all over Topeka and Shawnee County on September 17th at Garfield Park Community Center.  The day began with the ultimate example of the water cycle as a brief but powerful thunderstorm pummeled the park and we quickly regrouped on how we would roll out our two learning stations.  We moved to the concrete and the gazebo and hosted to the stations from there.  The students were none the wiser but we did have the opportunity for the first couple of groups to start with everyone’s personal experience with the water cycle in the form of “precipitation”.  As each student was handed a string with a yellow bead on it and were invited to go on a journey and imagine they were a water molecule.  Students rolled die and began their journey.  Some spent several rolls in the clouds while others visited plants, animals, and lake stations picking up beads at each station.  At the end students were encouraged to share with the group their journey and then make the bead chains into bracelets.  The journeys are all unique and fun and students learn about precipitation, condensation, evaporation and storage but more importantly they learn how vital water is to our earth.

The event is sponsored by The Topeka Water Festival Planning Committee and the Kansas Association of Conservation and Environmental Education (KACEE).

I personally want to thank Bryan Falk, Ken Keller, Brendan Wiley, Roger Aeschliman, Mike Kuner, Lee Morris, Gary Shofner and Joanie Underwood. Each shared their knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment to learning with each of the students.  It was truly service above self through the rain and through the heat.

August Message from Clara:

Hello!

So here are my memories so far:

One month ago, I came to Kansas. In the first week we just drove around Topeka or down to Kansas City to show me the area. One week later, my host family and me went to New York and Syracuse! Syracuse is a beautiful city with a wonderful campus. It was very interesting to hear what I could study, but after I saw what I had to be capable of, I quickly forgot my Syracuse-dream. Two days  later we went to New York City. The big apple is just wonderful, with a lot of people and I definitely love this city!  I ate the best cheesecake in the world (Lindy's I guess).  Click on Read More!

Posted by Linda Ireland on Jul 15, 2015
July 9, 2015 - Topeka USD 501 Board thanked members of the Topeka Downtown and Topeka South Rotary Clubs for their Sole Mate program, in which they provide shoes, socks and coats for needy children. During the past three years, Rotarians have purchased clothing for an estimated 1,500 children by partnering with schools to identify children in need.  An award was presented to each club.  Mark DeGroff accepted the award on behalf of the Downtown Topeka Rotary Club.

501 Board member Nancy Kirk said some Topeka families and children are facing difficult situations, and all help is appreciated.  “That’s just scratching the surface sometimes of the needs of our kids,” Kirk said. “That the community cares, too, is really important to us.”

WALKING FOR WATER

Topeka’s Walking for Water is a Rotary sponsored awareness and philanthropic initiative. Children aged 10-15 are sponsored to walk 6 kilometers while carrying 6 liters of water in a backpack. This is the average distance and weight of water that children in developing countries travel and carry home each day.

All funds go directly to the project and financing the backpacks. The chosen project is called Max Value for WASH. It aims to reduce child mortality and morbidity by implementing safe water, sanitation, hygiene education, safe motherhood in Bluegold Polders in Patuakhali Sadar, Bangladesh.

This will enable 70,000 extremely poor people living in hard to reach areas moving towards healthy life through access to WASH and Safe motherhood.

We are looking for more than 25 volunteers. The goal participation is 200 children. This gives us roughly 8 participants per volunteer. Parents are welcome to walk with their kids.  To volunteer, contact Amanda Brown:  amanda.brown@brewsterliving.org.

Location: Landon Trail next to Brown v. Board of Education
Volunteer Set Up: 8:30am
Participation Registration: 9am
Walk Start Time: 10am

Washburn Tech Offers Vocational Programs to Community

Posted by Jamison Law on Aug 04, 2013

Washburn Tech Imagehas a long history of providing technical education in Topeka, tracing its roots back to the beginning of World War II. Legislation passed created a vocational program in the 1960’s which gave college goers a different approach to starting college, besides jumping in head and wallet first. Many students not knowing exactly what they want to do, now had a vessel for testing new waters, without the full financial burden of two years. Kaw Area Technical School provided many students a vast array of technical skills they could acquire. However, being a technical school, some credits would not transfer to four year college programs.

Rotary Co-Sponsors Peace Forum

Posted by Blanche Parks on Mar 27, 2013

ImageThe Downtown Topeka Rotary was a co-sponsor of the Peace Forum at Kansas State University on February 23, 2013. The Forum sponsors were the Manhattan  Konza  Rotary Club and  Manhattan Rotary Club.

Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka, challenged all Rotary clubs to sponsor at least one peace forum during the 2012-13 year. Tanaka established “Peace Through Service” as the theme for Rotary International and asked Rotary clubs worldwide to host Peace Forums discussing how their respective communities could effectively contribute to peace and conflict resolution.  Our club surpassed the challenge by sponsoring or co-sponsoring a total of six Peace activities.

President Blanche served on the Manhattan conference planning committee.  Larry Dimmit served as a panelist on a panel session titled, “Humanitarian Assistance Projects”.

The keynote speaker was Mary Eisenhower, Granddaughter of Former US President Dwight D. Eisenhower.  She is President & CEO of People to People International. This organization is dedicated to “peace through understanding”.

The purpose of the Peace Forum was to help educate and heighten awareness of people of all ages, backgrounds and interests regarding peace related issues.  Participation in the event helped to empower attendees with new knowledge and understanding of how each of us can contribute to a more peaceful world through their local, state and international community.  Session topics included peace related student and citizen exchanges and study abroad programs, peace related service and projects abroad, peace and conflict resolution in our schools & communities, peace advocacy groups and efforts, peacekeeping matters related to diplomatic and military service.

At the request of the Downtown Topeka Rotary, City of Topeka Mayor Bill Bunten proclaimed February 23, 2013 as Peace Day in the City.

The Doctor is In

Posted by Gregory Hill on Aug 02, 2011
Hours after a massive earthquake hit Haiti in January 2010, Claude Surena, a physician, turned his home into a makeshift triage center, sheltering more than 100 injured people.

Using the limited supplies of medicine and food that Rotarians had managed to collect, Surena, his wife, and other volunteers cared for victims, many of whom were in critical condition. The capital city of Port-au-Prince was damaged extensively, making communication almost impossible and resources scarce.

To shake a man’s hand is a simple gesture, often of introduction or more commonly, a formal way to say hello or goodbye. It’s something I do almost daily in my life. Sometimes, however, the opportunity to shake a person’s hand leads to an appreciation of so much more.

The Quandary of Health Care Reform

Posted by Gregory Hill on Mar 17, 2011

There is no question that the health care reform package passed last year is both complicated and controversial.  Nevertheless, Kansas is working diligently to develop programs to meet the 2014 deadline.

Matt All, General Counsel for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, spoke to the Topeka Rotary Club and helped explain both the requirements of the law along with what he expects to happen once the act is fully implemented.

I appreciate all of the feedback from last week’s bulletin.  My goal, while not always achievable, is to send a Friday bulletin that covers the previous day’s meeting.  In that bulletin, we will have a story, photographs and if available, the video from the meeting.

I have been interested and involved with Washburn for several years, both undergrad and law school. When I started in 1946, just after WW11, with lots of other G I Bill students, the school had a fine foundation a good history of ok finances and good conservative leadership. The student body grew rapidly. Prior to the war the school has an estimated enrollment maybe between 4 to 700, mainly traditional students. After graduating in 1951 and for some time did not have much contact with the school, but later started taking various courses.

Washburn's Jerry Farley Speaks on the need for civility in our society

We are in a crisis of civility in this country according to Dr. Jerry Farley, President of Washburn University, who spoke at the weekly meeting of the Topeka Rotary Club.

“About every three weeks or so, we invite about thirty to thirty-five students over to our house and we will discuss a particular topic,” said Farley. “We try to pick a topic that will stimulate a lot of discussion about things they may have not ever thought about before.  But about twice a year, we will talk about either ethics or civility."

University of Kansas Head Coach Turner Gill Defines the ABC's of Leadership

It’s hard to dispute the value of knowledge, hard work and attitude.   But for Turner Gill, Head Coach of the University of Kansas football team, those words have deep meaning within them.

Coach Gill was the speaker at the weekly Topeka Rotary Club meeting on Thursday at the Ramada Inn.

“I’m here today talking to the Rotary club because we are connected as people who are trying to help our state become better,” Gill said, beginning his presentation.  Rather than focusing on Jayhawk football, Gill spoke mostly on a leadership philosophy that begins with those three words.

Rotary clubs light up the world to end polio

Posted by Gregory Hill on Feb 23, 2011

EVANSTON, Ill. U.S.A. (17 February 2011) -- What do Italy’s Trevi Fountain, India’s Charminar monument, and the New York Stock Exchange building have in common?

Each of these iconic landmarks will provide a dramatic backdrop for an equally dramatic message: End Polio Now. Those three words – representing Rotary’s pledge to rid the world of this crippling childhood disease -- will be projected onto each structure during the week surrounding 23 February 2011, the humanitarian service organization’s 106th anniversary.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.  At least in the Topeka television broadcasting market anyway.

“If my predecessors would have gotten up and given this presentation in 1971, they would have said there was one license for public television and there was WIBW and one other television station in Topeka,” said Jim Ogle, General Manager of WIBW television in Topeka.  “Guess what, it’s back to the future.  We are returning as a television market to basically where we were in 1971.”

Volunteers are needed for the Make A Splash Topeka Water Festival September 19th.    This annual festival is at Garfield Park and we need at least 8 volunteers to fill the time slots between 9:00 a.m. and 2:15 p.m.  Rotary volunteers help 4th grade students with an activity called The Incredible Journey.  The activity has students pretend to be water drops, rolling dice to see where they go next in the water cycle.  Students collect colored beads as they travel as different forms of water, ending up with a water cycle bracelet. Club members who have volunteered in past years say this is a fun project!

You can sign up to volunteer for a shift at the festival at the club meeting or e-mail Marie Pyko [MPyko@tscpl.org] for more information.

Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins Speaks to the Topeka Rotary Club

Representative Lynn Jenkins believes that the size of government spending is growing out of control.  Few would probably disagree with her assessment, particularly given the gloomy scenery she painted with respect to the spending on discretionary items she says represents “ninety-nine percent of what Congress argues about.”  But now, given the projected costs of non-discretionary items such as Medicare and Social Security, pretty much everything is on the table.
